Norbert
X. Dowd, Jr.
|
NORBERT
DOWD came to Bapst heavily burdened with tradition and prestige.
It was a matter of conjecture among all and sundry just how
Norby would live up to the distinction of being a son of one
of the first members of the Bapst Faculty. After four years
Norby has proved himself to be even more than anything that
had been anticipated. He has won honors in all his classes,
in oratory, and in debating. Norby did more than his share
to contribute to the success of sports and has been prominent
in all social functions. He plans to attend Holy Cross next
year.

NORBERT
X. DOWD JR.
COATSVILLE,
PA. and BANGOR - Norbert Xavier Dowd Jr., 67, died Oct. 11,
2002, in Coatsville, Pa. He was born March 9, 1935, in Bangor,
the son of Norbert X. Dowd Sr. and Theresa F. (Nelligan) Dowd.
Norby
was Valedictorian of his class at John Bapst High School in
1953 and graduated Cum Laude from the Honors Curriculum at
the College of The Holy Cross in 1957.
He
began a 30 year career in the corporate headquarters of John
Hancock Insurance Company in Boston, where he became one of
the chief architects of the program to convert from conventional
business practices involving paper transactions and filing
to computers.
He
then traveled extensively to train and troubleshoot the implementation
of this revolutionary technology in offices across the country.
After his retirement in 1986, he returned to the Bangor area,
where he lived until moving to Pennsylvania in 1999.
Norby
was an immediately likable man whose intellect and wit enabled
him to become fast friends with many people from all walks
of life.
He
was a loyal friend to children and the less fortunate. He
was a deeply religious man who was intensely proud of his
children and grandchildren. He will be missed by all who knew
him and forever remembered with love. Our family is diminished
by his passing.
He
is survived by his six children, Deborah Dowd and Catherine
O'Connell, both of Hopedale, Mass., Robin Dowd-Steffan of
Orchard Park, N.Y., Christopher Dowd of Sutton, Mass., Kevin
Dowd of Menden, Mass., and William Dowd of Coatsville, Pa.;
two brothers, James G. Dowd of Brewer, Dr. Shaun N. Dowd of
Bangor; eight grandchildren, five nieces, one nephew, one
aunt, one uncle, several cousins.
Friends
may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center
St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated
10 a.m. Friday, at St. John's Catholic Church. Burial will
be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor.
