Richard McAloon

RICHARD McALOON is the most handsome of the McAloons' to attend Bapst. Dick did not come into his own until his Senior year when he shared top honors with Pete Robinson in the Minstrel. He is a natural fun-maker, but he has the saving grace of being modest and retiring. Dick is a pioneer member of the C.Y.O. and has made many contributions to the success of the organization. In all probability, Dick will follow his older brothers to Maine for Business Administration - and who knows, some day he may become the owner of the Parkview Grocery.

After graduation and prior to attending the University of Maine, I was employed by New England Telephone doing land survey work .

I entered the university in the fall of 1953, and my stay at U of M (first time) was brief. After one year and by mutual agreement with the Dean of Students, I took my unappreciated talent back to New England Tel. in the engineering department.

The period 1954-1957 was spent learning and doing those tasks senior engineers don’t like to do.

In 1957, I was invited to join the Army and after completing basic training in Colorado, I was assigned to the Signal school at Fort Monmouth, NJ. After finishing school I was reassigned to a classified project and remained at Fort Monmouth until my discharge in 1959.

During this period, I married Joanne Curran from Orono. We were divorced in 1979. I am the father of four and the grandfather of three.

After my military service, I returned to New England Tel., to resume my career as an Engineering Associate. In 1965 I was promoted to Engineer and to Project Engineer in 1968.

In 1972 I was transferred to Portland and assigned as Project Engineer for the Lewiston/ Rumford areas. In 1974 through 1978, I was the Planning Manager for the Portland District. Subsequent to this assignment and completing my active employment with NYNEX, I was the Area Operations Manager – Specific for Southern Maine.

In March of 1988, I retired from NYNEX and in April, 1988, I returned as a consultant (fancy word for contract engineer). I have continued in this capacity but have reduced the time element from five to three days a week not because I’m smarter but I require more sleep.

I am anxious to see all and reminisce about all the good times. I often think that we went through our youth in the best of times. As you will see I have changed very little; in fact, I have more hair than when in school although it has relocated to my ears and nose. I have also bulked up as they say at the gym but mostly at my belt line.

Looking forward to renewing friendships and reminiscing about one of the most memorable periods in my life.
